Opportunities

Nature School Intern (Volunteer)

 

Location: Louisville, CO

Schedule: Part-time, seasonal or semester-based

Compensation: Volunteer position (unpaid)

 

Heartseed welcomes Volunteer Interns who are interested in gaining hands-on experience in a nature-based elementary learning environment.

 

This role is designed for individuals who want to learn through observation, participation, and reflection in a real classroom setting.

​

This role may be a good fit if you:

    •    Are curious about nature-based, experiential, or play-based education

    •    Enjoy working outdoors in all seasons

    •    Are thoughtful, observant, and eager to learn

    •    Are exploring education, child development, environmental education, therapy, or a related field

​

Interns may support:

    •    Outdoor classroom activities and explorations

    •    Small group work and project support

    •    Daily routines and nature walks

    •    Classroom preparation and organization

    •    Observation and reflection alongside lead teachers

 

 

This is a volunteer learning role with mentorship and guidance provided. Interns gain exposure to nature-based pedagogy, classroom flow, and relationship-centered teaching.

This position is ideal for people interested in the practice of wholistic and nature-based education (early elementary), gaining experience in the field of education with a highly qualified and licensed teacher, taking part in the up and coming movement of nature-based education and transforming schooling for our youth, and/or just experiencing first hand the joy, wonder, and many benefits of spending time with children in nature!

 

Interns and volunteers will join us for a full school day/s, Monday-Thursday from 9am-2pm. Interns/volunteers will meet us at our main location along Coal Creek trail in Louisville. You will have to pass a background check and be cleared to work with young children.

Substitute Nature School Teacher

​

Location: Louisville, CO

Schedule: As-needed, weekday daytime hours

Compensation: Hourly

 

Heartseed is seeking Substitute Teachers who feel comfortable supporting a nature-based classroom when a lead teacher is out.

​

This role may be a good fit if you:

 

    •    Have experience working with children (education, camps, outdoor programs, childcare, etc.)

    •    Feel confident outdoors and adaptable to changing conditions

    •    Can hold clear, calm boundaries while remaining warm and supportive

    •    Are able to step into an established classroom rhythm

​

Responsibilities include:

 

    •    Supporting the daily flow and routines of the class

    •    Supervising outdoor play and exploration

    •    Facilitating simple activities as needed

    •    Ensuring student safety and emotional well-being

Teacher Induction Program (Initial → Professional License)

​

Location: Louisville, CO

Program Length: One academic year

Eligibility: Teachers holding a Colorado Initial License

 

Heartseed offers a one-year Teacher Induction Program for educators seeking to advance from a Colorado Initial License to a Professional License within a nature-based, experiential learning environment.

 

This induction program is designed for teachers who are interested in completing their induction requirements in a small, relationship-centered setting while remaining fully aligned with Colorado Department of Education expectations.

​

The Heartseed Induction Program includes:

 

    •    A full academic year of teaching practice in a nature-based classroom or your current educational setting 

    •    Ongoing mentoring and coaching from experienced educators

    •    Structured reflection and professional growth planning

    •    Support in documenting and completing all CDE induction requirements

​

This program may be a good fit for teachers who:

​

    •    Hold a Colorado Initial Teaching License

    •    Are teaching or planning to teach in a nature-based or experiential setting

    •    Value mentorship, reflection, and professional growth

    •    Are seeking an alternative induction environment aligned with their teaching context

​

Completion of the Heartseed Induction Program supports eligibility for recommendation for a Colorado Professional Teaching License, pending successful fulfillment of all program and state requirements.

Teacher Preparation Program

Location: Louisville, CO

Program Length: One academic year

Outcome: Eligibility for recommendation for a Colorado Initial Teaching License

 

Heartseed offers a Teacher Preparation Program (EPP) designed for individuals seeking an Initial Colorado Teaching License through a site-based, experiential pathway aligned with nature-based and relationship-centered education.

 

This program is intended for candidates who are teaching, or preparing to teach, in nature-based, experiential, or community-embedded learning environments and are seeking a licensure pathway that aligns with their instructional context while meeting all Colorado Department of Education requirements.

 

Candidates complete the program through a combination of asynchronous coursework, supervised clinical teaching practice, observation, mentoring, and reflection, all aligned to the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards.

 

Program Features:

​

    •    A full academic year of supervised teaching practice in a nature-based or experiential classroom

    •    Placement may occur within a Heartseed classroom or in the candidate’s own approved teaching setting

    •    Asynchronous coursework aligned to state standards and program competencies

    •    Regular formal observations with written feedback

    •    Ongoing mentoring and professional reflection

    •    Structured seminars to support instructional growth and professional development

 

This program may be a good fit for individuals who:

​

    •    Are seeking an Initial Colorado Teaching License

    •    Are interested in nature-based, experiential, or alternative educational settings

    •    Have experience working with children or youth and are ready to take on a teaching role

    •    Value mentorship, reflection, and applied learning

​

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, candidates are eligible for recommendation for an Initial Colorado Teaching License, pending approval by the Colorado Department of Education.
